The Bachelor of Arts in Human Education and Human Development, Secondary English Language Arts prepares competent education professionals.

Students join a top education school with collaborative teams of dedicated teachers and award-winning faculty who will prepare students for success in any classroom anywhere. The program is ranked as a top school according to U.S. News and World Report. The program has a strong emphasis on equity and social justice. Students engage with Colorado's rapidly diversifying student and family population.

Students will be surrounded by other committed, innovative, and compassionate students. The program's cohorts crave a deeper level of preparedness. One that will allow them to give their best to every student, every day.

Students in this program will:

  • Learn to plan assessment-informed literacy instruction for educational excellence and equity for all children from a variety of racial, ethnic, socio-economic and ability levels
  • Develop deep understanding of the diverse ways children learn about literacy and develop within their families, communities and schools and learn skills to blend relevant and engaging curricula with standards-based teaching methods
  • Gain the skills necessary for effective classroom organization and management.

Many schools promise a teacher residency with experiential learning under a teacher mentor. Few can deliver one as well-supported and prepared as this program. For more than 30 years, we have been working with area schools to create a proven residency program. The curriculum supports development as students work with teams of dedicated practicing teachers, teacher leaders, and university faculty in the school.

Due to CU Denver's urban location and partnerships across Colorado and the emphasis on teaching in diverse contexts, graduates are ready to lead and make a difference in secondary classrooms, in any district. Starting in the first year, students are placed in a partner school. In the final year, the experience culminates in a full-time student teaching residency so that students can experience life as a teacher.
