The Learning Design & Technology (LDT) MA is a unique graduate program. Students combine LDT certificates to create customize paths based on individual learning, professional interests and goals. The LDT MA program may also be completed for an added Teacher Librarian (K-12) endorsement or Instructional Technology Specialist (K-12) endorsement from the Colorado Department of Education (CDE).

Delivered completely online, the Learning Design & Technology (LDT) MA relies on the combining of certificate programs to flexibly address various professional roles and settings. Instead of an MA program that requires all students to complete a specific set of courses, this unique approach to the MA allows for differentiation based on your unique learning and professional interests and goals. In the LDT MA 30-credit hour program students complete two certificates on their way to the MA, leaving only an additional 6- to 9-credit hours to complete for graduation. Each certificate may be completed in one year or less, with the LDT MA completed in two years. In addition, because the LDT MA and certificate programs are fully online, professionals from all over the world may participate.

LDT MA students achieve four professional competencies through relevant, applied coursework:

Critical Digital Literacy

Become competent, creative, and confident in the use of various digital media and technology in support of learning, collaboration, and communication.

Instructional Design

Design learning opportunities, experiences, and programs, making best use of resources and engaging the full range of learner needs and strengths.

Leadership

Reflect on the qualities of leadership and actively seek to infuse those qualities in one's work.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion;

Encourage dialogue that heightens awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and that expose the hidden and visible ways technologies and institutions perpetuate marginalization.

Below you will find sample program plans that illustrate how the LDT certificates are combined to meet the requirements of the LDT MA. Although these are recommended program plans, your professional goals and interests determine which certificates you combine to complete the LDT MA; you will work with your Academic Advisor and Faculty Mentor to finalize the most appropriate program plan for you.

Sample MA Program Plans:

K-12 teachers who are interested in the use of digital media to support student engagement and learning and wish to provide technology leadership in their schools and districts (with Colorado endorsement option) would complete two of the following three certificate programs -- Open Digital Pedagogy, Online Teaching and Learning, and Leadership in Learning Design and Technology -- plus two additional required courses.

Professionals who are interested in leading highly effective school libraries in K-12 settings (with Colorado endorsement option) would complete the Highly Effective School Libraries and Open Digital Pedagogy certificates plus three additional required courses.

College instructors who plan on doing course and curriculum design work and are interested in the use of digital media to support student engagement and learning would complete the Open Digital Pedagogy and Online Teaching and Learning certificates, plus two additional required courses.

Professionals who plan on doing course and training design work in workplace  settings (corporate, nonprofit, military, government, and community) would complete the Learning Experience Design certificate with either the Online Teaching and Learning or Leadership in Learning Design and Technology certificates, plus two additional required courses.

Professionals who plan on doing course and curriculum design work in K-12 and/or higher education settings would complete the Learning Experience Design certificate with either the Online Teaching and Learning or Open Digital Pedagogy certificates, plus two additional required courses.

Application Deadlines

We practice "rolling admission" and after your application is complete, we strive to notify you of your admission status in no more than two to three weeks.

The following deadlines are firm, early submissions are encouraged.

Fall Semester: June 1

Spring Semester: November 1

Summer Semester: April 1

  • 3 recommendation letters
  • Official Transcripts from all institutions attended
  • If applying for an endorsement, proof of teaching license or special services license is required
  • Resume/CV
  • Written Statement: Describe your interest in the program, your special strengths, and the goals you hope to achieve through your work in the program
  • $50.00 application fee
  • International Applicants only: Proof of English Language Proficiency (International applicants should review the following information regarding English language proficiency)
  • Admissions Interview: An interview may be required as part of the admissions process. If so, applicants will be contacted with more details.
