The Prosocial Leader certificate is designed for school leaders who are interested in leading schoolwide social and emotional learning (SEL) programs. This professional learning experience consists of three courses remotely facilitated in partnership with CREATE and the Prosocial Leader Lab.

In University of Colorado Denver’s Prosocial Leader certificate, you will focus on the following four themes:
- Establishing shared understanding of SEL for leaders and systemic SEL. You will engage in interactive exploration of various SEL frameworks and connect your own beliefs and values with those of a school with SEL.
- Strengthening adult SEL. You will explore tangible strategies that support adults in cultivating your own SEL through a CARE program.
- Implementing SEL and developing a sustainable plan. You will examine strategies for actively engaging students in learning and practicing social and emotional competencies across classrooms and school environments and in partnership with families and communities, including relationship-building and supportive learning environments.
- Further exploring tools and resources for collecting data to use tracking progress toward SEL school goals. You will draft action steps and an aligned evaluation plan and develop strategies for engaging the full school community in learning from the data.
The Prosocial Leader certificate consists of three courses; each for 45 re-licensing professional development hours which equals 135 contact hours. These courses may also be taken for 3 graduate credits each.
Students who would like graduate credit, apply after the completion of the D3 professional learning course through our Continuing Professional Education Office.
Time Commitment
Weekly remote, synchronous Zoom meetings:
- EDUC 5401: Leading with SEL in Mind [Fall term 2023]; Thursdays, 5 – 7:30pm MT
- EDUC 5402: Cultivating Awareness & Resilience for Administrators [Spring 2024]
- EDUC 5403: Systemic Implementation of SEL [Fall term 2024]
Program Costs
Participants may choose the following options:
- Complete all three courses for a non-credit, 135-hour re-licensure certificate for $905.00 per course
- Beginning in Spring 2023: Participants will be able to convert the Prosocial Leader courses to graduate credits after the completion of each course for an additional $357 per course.

EDUC 5401 - Leading with Social and Emotional Learning in Mind

Course Details
This course will enable administrators to understand, investigate, assess, and plan to increase the quality and depth of social and emotional learning (SEL) in their schools and districts. Participants will explore the theoretical frameworks and scientific findings in the growing field of SEL. The course adopts an empirical and experiential approach whereby participants will both analyze extant research and carry out job-embedded assignments to assess and plan for more systemic models of SEL, as well as reflect on what they do and can do as leaders to support high-quality SEL in their contexts. EDUC 5402 - Cultivating Awareness & Resilience for Administrators

Course Details
CARE (Cultivating Awareness and Resilience in Education) for administrators is a professional development program that helps administrators handle stress and build their personal leadership capacities. The goal of CARE is to offer administrators tools and resources for reducing stress, preventing burnout, enlivening their leadership to help staff students to thrive socially, emotionally, and academically. EDUC 5403 - Systemic Implementation of SEL

Course Details
This course focuses on Systemic SEL in which students will examine strategies for actively engaging students in learning and practicing social emotional competencies across classrooms and school environments, and in partnership with families and communities. The course will also focus on creating the conditions for students learning, including relationship-building and supportive learning environments. Students will further explore tools and resources for collecting data to use to track progress toward their SEL goals at their schools, draft action steps and an aligned evaluation plan, and develop strategies for engaging the full school community in learning from the data. (45 contact hours)
