What you'll learn

Develop powerful math learning environments and curriculum to support your pre-K through 12th grade students. Cherry Creek School District and University of Colorado Denver’s new graduate certificate in Mathematics Learning and Teaching is designed for general and special education teachers. It provides you with an opportunity to grow your knowledge of how people construct math knowledge from birth through high school.  

Each course is organized to include teachers at all Pre-K-12 school grade levels, including general and special education teachers. Each stand-alone course is worth 3 graduate-level semester credits and may be applied towards the certificate or a master’s degree in the School of Education & Human Development at the University of Colorado Denver.

Curriculum

  • MTED 5619 - Expanding Conceptions of Number (Fall 2025) 3 credits

    Educators’ learning will focus on quantities and operations in place-value number systems, how students understand such systems beginning at birth, and how teaching may promote students’ progress.

  • MTED 5620 - Developing Fractional & Proportional Reasoning (Spring 2026) 3 credits

    Educators’ learning will focus on quantities and operations involved with ratio, fraction, and proportion; and on how students understand ratio, fraction and proportion; and how teaching may promote students’ progress.

  • MTED 5070 - Rehumanizing mathematics (Summer 2026) 3 credits

    Educators’ learning will focus on conceptions of society’s role in determining what counts as mathematics to be taught and learned. Increases abilities to address issues of privilege and oppression that impact students’ opportunities.
