What Students

The program encourages applicants with a wide range of professional experiences. Upon successful completion of all components of this program, students will be ready to be a licensed middle school math teacher.

At CU Denver, students learn from internationally recognized faculty members known for innovation and research. Students are surrounded by other committed, innovative, and compassionate students. The program's cohorts crave a deeper level of preparedness—one that will allow them to give their best to every student, every day.

In this program students will:

  • Learn to plan assessment-informed math instruction for educational excellence and equity for all middle school children from diverse racial, ethnic, socio-economic and ability backgrounds.
  • Develop deep understanding of the diverse ways children learn math and develop within their families and communities and in schools; and gain skills to bring a relevant and engaging curriculum to your standards-based teaching.
  • Gain the skills for effective middle school classroom organization and management.
Many schools promise a teacher residency with experiential learning under a teacher mentor. Few can deliver one as well-supported and prepared. For more than 25 years, the program has been working with area schools to create a proven residency program that supports students’ development. Students will work with teams of practicing teachers, teacher leaders, and university faculty in the school. Further, because of CU Denver's urban location and partnerships across the state as well as its emphasis on teaching in diverse contexts, graduates are ready to lead and make a difference in any elementary classroom, in any district. Starting in the first year, students are placed in a partner school. In the final year, the experience culminates in a full-time student teaching residency so that students can experience life as a teacher.

Employers understand that CU Denver graduates bring extreme value to their teams. Human resource directors, principals, and superintendents say that CU Denver candidates enter their first year of teaching with the knowledge, skills, and confidence of second- and third-year teachers.
