The Bachelor of Arts in Human Education and Human Development, Elementary Education (License) prepares competent elementary education professionals. Graduates are known for embracing the whole child in inclusive, culturally, and linguistically diverse public school or community-based early childhood education settings.
Students join a top education school with collaborative teams of dedicated teachers and award-winning faculty who will prepare students for success in any classroom. Students in the program will:
- Learn to plan assessment-informed instruction for educational excellence and equity for all children from diverse racial, ethnic, language, socioeconomic and ability backgrounds.
- Develop a deep understanding of the diverse ways children learn and develop within their families, communities, and schools. Students gain skills to bring a relevant and engaging curriculum to standards-based teaching.
- Gain experience in relevant disciplines—math, literacy, science, and social studies. Students will also gain skills for effective classroom organization and management.
Many schools promise a teacher residency with experiential learning under a teacher mentor. Few can deliver one as well-supported and prepared. For more than 30 years, the program has worked with area schools to create a proven residency program. This partnership supports students' development as they work with teams of dedicated practicing teachers, teacher leaders, and university faculty.
Due to CU Denver's urban location and partnerships across the state as well as the emphasis on teaching in diverse contexts, graduates are ready to lead and make a difference in any elementary classroom, in any district. Starting in the first-year students will be placed in a partner school. In the final year, the experience culminates in a full-time teaching residency so that students can experience life as a teacher.

We accept applications from incoming first-year students, current students at CU Denver, students transferring from community colleges or four-year institutions, individuals who are working as paraprofessionals, assistant teachers or developmental intervention assistants.

I’m a first-generation Latina student aspiring to give back to my community through teaching. The sacrifices my immigrant parents made have shaped my commitment to education and continue to guide the path I am on today. SEHD has provided me with the tools to become the educator I wished I had during my early elementary years.
