National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) Announces New Bilingual Research Journal (BRJ) Editorial Team Led by CU Denver and Purdue University Scholars

Collectively, the new BRJ editorial team brings a passion for the field of bilingual education and a wealth of experiences in a wide variety of settings that look to continue the tradition of mentoring and providing opportunities for the next generation of emerging scholars, especially BIPOC scholars, and to share groundbreaking new knowledge in the field of bilingual research.
Additionally, the new editorial team would like to create a space for the voices of those traditionally marginalized to be heard and made visible by encouraging and strategically inviting scholarship that addresses key issues in the field and sets an agenda for future scholarship, focusing on five key areas in defining the field: 1.) power, status, and equity; 2.) dynamic and intersectional identities; 3.) bilingual children and youth development; 4.) teacher development and preparation, and 5.) community and family engagement.

Ester de Jong, EdD is a professor and program leader in the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education program at the University of Colorado Denver. Prior to CU Denver, she was the Director of the School of Teaching and Learning and Professor in ESOL/Bilingual Education at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. Dr. de Jong was President of TESOL International Association (2017-2018).

Associate Professor, Early Childhood Education

Cristina Gillanders, PhD is an associate professor in Early Childhood Education in the School of Education & Human Development at the University of Colorado Denver. Her research focuses on the development and learning of dual language learners, emergent literacy, minority parents’ beliefs and practices, and home-school partnerships. She served as a co-PI in the Nuestros Niños School Readiness Professional Development Program (funded by NICHD), an experimental study that examined the efficacy of a professional development program aimed to promote language, literacy, and social-emotional development, and mathematics learning in prekindergarten Spanish-English dual language learners. She also has published several articles related to Latino and African American parents’ beliefs and practices related to preparing young children for school. She has served on the Board of Directors in the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and received a service award from the NAEYC Latino Special Interest Group.

Lucinda Soltero-González, PhD joined the School of Education & Human Development in 2018 as an assistant professor in the Responsive Literacy Education program.
Prior to coming to CU Denver, Dr. Soltero-González was an assistant professor in Educational Equity and Cultural Diversity program at CU Boulder, a biliteracy coordinator in the Adams County School District 14 in Colorado, and an elementary classroom teacher and special education teacher for several years in Mexico and the U.S. Her research has focused on early biliteracy learning and teaching in young Spanish-speaking children and biliteracy practices in U.S. schools. She investigates ways to create culturally and linguistically responsive learning environments to increase equitable educational opportunities for students from non-dominant backgrounds in school. Her work has been published in a variety of peer-reviewed journals, edited volumes, and co-authored books.
Dr. Soltero-González enjoys hiking and camping with her husband and twins in the Colorado mountains. She and her family cherish their multilingual and multicultural identities.

Associate Professor, Literacy & Language

Trish Morita-Mullaney, PhD, is an associate professor in English Language Learning (ELL) at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN. She also holds a courtesy appointment in the Asian American studies program. Trish is a licensed K-12 teacher, coach and administrator from Arizona and Indiana where she taught and led ELL adult education, middle and elementary school. She served as Past President of the Indiana Chapter for Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages.
Her research focuses on the intersections between language learning, gender and race, and how this informs the identity acts of educators of bilingual students. Guided by critical and feminist thought, she examines how these overlapping identities inform the logics of educational decision making for bilingual students.

Adriana Álvarez is assistant professor in the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education program. Her research interests center on biliteracy and family engagement with a focus on equity-oriented and strength-based approaches in Spanish-speaking communities. She was a bilingual teacher for eleven years in the border community of El Paso, Texas prior to receiving her PhD in Educational Equity and Cultural Diversity from the University of Colorado Boulder.

Sofía Chaparro, PhD is originally from El Paso, Texas, where she grew up bilingually and transnationally between El Paso, Texas, and Cd. Juárez in Mexico. She is the daughter of Mexican parents and bilingual educators and attended elementary school in Mexico. In college, she studied psychology and quickly realized her passion was education. Sofía obtained her teaching license and masters' degree from the Boston College, where she was part of the Donovan Urban Scholars Program. She began her teaching career as a bilingual teacher in Boston Public Schools, teaching 2nd grade within a TWI program. Chaparro then taught 4th grade in El Paso, Texas, until deciding to attend graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Sofía has always had a passion for bilingualism, and for teaching and learning, and considers herself lucky to do it for a living!
