The University of Colorado Denver’s online MA in Literacy Education with the Reading Specialist Endorsement has earned the International Literacy Association’s (ILA) National Recognition with Distinction, the organization’s top honor for literacy educator preparation programs. This prestigious honor from the leading literacy organization follows a year‑long review that included a detailed analysis of program curricula, assessments, faculty research, and interviews with students, alumni, faculty, and university leaders. It places CU Denver among only seven universities nationwide whose reading specialist graduate literacy education programs exceed ILA’s highest expectations for curriculum design, instructional excellence, and candidate impact.
The award speaks volumes about the dedication, innovation, and outstanding curriculum design work accomplished by CU Denver’s Responsive Literacy Education Program team members Lori Elliott, Erica Holyoke, Lucinda Soltero-González, and Sarah Woodard who have enhanced and grown the fully online program in recent years. “This distinction reflects our faculty’s commitment to preparing literacy professionals who approach teaching with deep instructional knowledge, cultural responsiveness, and curiosity,” said Soltero‑González.
Reviewers commended CU Denver’s alignment with ILA standards, its focus on equity‑centered and culturally sustaining practices, and its innovative online delivery model, which draws educators from across the U.S. and around the world.
“Our redesign work centered on coherence—ensuring that every course, assessment, and learning experience supports literacy leaders in meaningful and practical ways,” said Holyoke.
“This remarkable achievement underscores the School of Education & Human Development’s mission to prepare professionals who strengthen communities and expand opportunities for learners of all ages,” said Marvin Lynn, PhD, dean of the School of Education & Human Development. “Reading is foundational because it empowers people to understand the world, engage with diverse perspectives, and pursue opportunities that shape their futures. I am incredibly proud of our faculty, students, alumni, and staff whose work made this honor possible.”
