DANE STICKNEY worked as a newspaper reporter in Colorado, Nebraska, and Iowa for over a decade before becoming a sixth- grade writing teacher at a middle school on Denver’s Northside. He and his students tackled social justice topics including undocumented student access to higher education, gentrification, and school- related gun protections while also achieving the district’s top scores in writing assessments. After five years in the classroom, Dane moved to the University of Colorado Denver, where he is a clinical assistant professor of education supporting teacher development through the ASPIRE to Teach program, the Curriculum and Instruction master’s track, and student voice and leadership initiatives at local school districts and organizations. He has been a member of the Transformative Student Voice research collective for a decade and chairs the Action Research Network of the Americas’ (ARNA) Youth Participatory Action Research subgroup. His work earned him the 2022 CU Denver campus-wide Service and Leadership award (IRC), ARNA’s Eduardo Flores leadership award in 2024, and the School of Education and Human Development research award (IRC). Dane earned his PhD in 2022; his dissertation focused on ideas of student voice, teacher agency, and sociopolitical development. He is lead author of Transformative Student Voice for Teachers: A Guide to Classroom Action published by Harvard Education Press in 2025.

Research
Dane's research focuses heavily on Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR), Transformative Student Voice (TSV), and the sociopolitical development of K-12 students.
Transformative Student Voice: Moving beyond token student representation (like basic surveys) to deep student-centered approaches where youth investigate and act on school and societal problems. Dane most recently conducted field research in 2025 and 2026 as part of a Spencer Foundation grant.
Sociopolitical & Youth Development: Examining how marginalized youth develop into political actors when given agency and leadership tools within public classrooms. A key focus is writing and presenting with students as opposed to just about them.
Teachers as Policy Actors: Analyzing how educators can push back against rigid structures to create democratic classrooms, partner with learners, and foster student agency. Dane and colleague Dr. Julia Kantor host a Teachers as Policy Actors forum each spring to connect educators with policymakers and education stakeholders.
