Dr. Sally Nathenson-Mejía’s work focuses on multilingual learners. Recently she looked at the ability of emergent bilinguals to develop multiplicative reasoning in elementary classrooms. She spent one year in a first grade classroom watching children move from being essential monolingual in Spanish to being bilinguals, able to read, write and converse in two languages. For five years she worked on a NPD grant project and an urban district English Language Acquisition training project, providing professional development and graduate courses to teachers who work with secondary bilingual students. PD included in-class coaching, school based Learning Labs, and inter-rater reliability on the assessment of English learners’ writing. All of her research has been presented at national and regional professional conferences and is being written up for publication.
