Michael Kocet PhD, LMHC, NCC, ACS

Michael M. Kocet is currently Professor of Counseling and former Assistant Vice Chancellor for Graduate Education (20023-2025) at the University of Colorado Denver. In his role as AVC, he was the chief administrative officer for graduate education, providing oversight and leadership to over 75 graduate programs in seven schools and colleges. He is co-author of the text Ethical Decision Making for the 21st Century Counselor and is author of Counseling Gay Men, Adolescents, and Boys: A Strength-Based Guide for Helping Professionals and Educators. Dr. Kocet is a Fellow of the American Counseling Association, the highest award given by the counseling profession in recognition of lifetime contributions to the profession. He is past president of the Society for Sexual, Affectional, Intersex, and Gender Expansive Identities. He served on the Association for Adult Development and Aging Grief Best Practices task force which created national guidelines for grief counseling. In his personal time he runs 5K races and half marathons, is a foodie and cook, and is dog dad to Malley and Aspen.

Areas of Expertise

His professional areas of interest include: ethical issues in counseling; counseling LGBTQ+ individuals; grief counseling, and culinary therapy, which is the therapeutic use of cooking in counseling.
