We are pleased to welcome Evan Engle-Newman, PhD, LPC, as an assistant teaching professor in the Counseling program.

Engle-Newman brings more than a decade of experience as a counselor, educator, supervisor, and mentor. Throughout his career, he has combined clinical practice with a passion for teaching, helping students develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to become effective counseling professionals.

He earned his PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) and holds a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS). His academic background is complemented by extensive professional experience in higher education, clinical supervision, and private practice.   

Before joining CU Denver, Engle-Newman served as an assistant clinical professor and practicum coordinator at Northern Arizona University, where he taught courses in counseling practicum, evidence-based counseling techniques, school counseling, and marriage, relationship, and family counseling. He has also taught at Boise State University, UNC, UCCS, and Red Rocks Community College.

In addition to his faculty experience, Engle-Newman owns and operates a private counseling practice working with the LGBTQ+/Queer communities and has supervised counselors-in-training and early-career professionals across a variety of settings. His work reflects a commitment to student growth, ethical practice, and preparing counselors to serve diverse individuals, families, and communities with empathy, cultural responsiveness, and respect.

Colleagues and students know Engle-Newman for his collaborative approach to teaching and mentoring. He is passionate about creating supportive learning environments where students from a range of backgrounds and lived experiences can thrive while developing their professional identities. His approach to counselor education emphasizes inclusivity, vulnerability, and affirming practices that help future counselors meet clients where they are.

At CU Denver, Engle-Newman will help prepare future counselors to meet the evolving needs of communities across Colorado and beyond.
