Black Education !mpact (BE!) Conference
“Know Your Worth”: BE! The Answer
May 1, 2017
8:15 am – 1:30 pm
Auraria Campus – Tivoli Turnhalle
The BE! Conference Planning Team anticipates inviting about 300 outstanding students from Denver Metro area high schools, 50 parents, and 50 educators to the Downtown Auraria Campus for a day of interaction. The conference will offer specific discussion groups and workshops designed to engage students, educators, and community members.
In addition to a College Fair and a College Navigation Panel discussion, specific workshop topics will include:
Understanding the combination of your core identity (body, mind/soul, spirit) and how this influences your vision of yourself is the first step and knowing and realizing your personal worth. We will explore how this key understanding impacts your life journey and long term goals.
Family is the first social institution that impacts our self-worth. Opportunities to explore the value of Family and how it influences self-worth and community will be explored.
Discussions will include the importance of Cultural Capital and how it influences our emotional and financial investments (particularly in our community). We will examine how knowing what you have to offer may influence our relationship with our community as members and leaders.
School (High School, College):
Education will continue to be important for improving all community outcomes. Knowing the value of education, the importance of learning, and having the ability to overcome Racial Discrimination or Race based Stratification, is a main ingredient for success with many African Americans. We will review how success in employment, career aspirations, financial well-being and good overall physical, mental and emotional health are improved by the desire to learn.
Understanding and knowing all aspects of your career options, work place dynamics, educational and course of study requirements, potential short and long term earnings, best schools to attend for the field, are critical in making “your best choice” leading to success.
Faith in a higher power has always been the cornerstone of the Black community. Rediscovering and knowing the practical function Faith-based institutions served – such as launching many Historically Black Colleges and Universities, banks, insurance companies, and financing many types of Black entrepreneurs – can inspire a new generation of imagination.
Increase your self-worth – invest in your emotional (mind), physical (body), and financial health (soul), and spirit – BE! The Answer you are looking for!
Finally, please encourage your students to apply for unrestricted scholarship funds at www.marinenunneducationfund.org. We will award two (2) college grants equaling up to $1000 each at the BE! Conference!
*We will also include virtual workshop participation via video conferencing for select sessions.
