What Students Learn
Turn passion for literature into a profession. This program prepares English teachers who expand students' worldviews, language development, interpretation skills, and creative thinking. In this four-year, 120-credit-hour program, students learn to plan assessment-informed instruction. Graduates provide educational excellence and equity for all children including those from diverse racial, ethnic, linguistic, class, and ability backgrounds.
Preparing English or Language Arts teachers is a collaborative process between the English department in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and the School of Education & Human Development. This program offers real-life experience with secondary schools in Denver area school districts.
In this teacher education program, students learn from faculty members known for innovation and research in literacy, language, social and emotional growth, and building a diverse teacher workforce. Through the English department, students garner the essential content and education theory needed to be effective English teachers. Through school district partnerships, students "live the life of a teacher," becoming vital members of the staff as teacher candidates.
Students may be starting college for the first time, transferring from another institution, or returning to the university setting after years away. Regardless, students join a top education school with collaborative teams of dedicated teachers and award-winning faculty who will prepare them for success in any classroom anywhere.
Any school can promise a teacher residency. Few can deliver one as well-supported and prepared. For more than 25 years, this program has partnered with area schools to create a residency program that supports development as students work with teams of dedicated practicing teachers, leaders, and university faculty. Courses
To earn this 120-credit hour degree, students must satisfy all requirements in each of the four areas below. Students should declare their track as early as possible to avoid taking classes that do not count toward their degree or licensure. Admission Requirements
We encourage applications from incoming freshmen, current students at CU Denver, students transferring from community colleges or four-year institutions, individuals who are working as paraprofessionals, assistant teachers or developmental intervention assistants and people who are interested in working in community-based organizations.
This program has rolling admissions; but, the application closes:
- Jan 1 for Spring semester
- May 15 for Summer semester
- August 1 for Fall semester.
